To kick off our Spark Writers Group weekly writing invitations, let’s talk clothes! We all wear them, love them, hate them—and they always tell a story. What we put on our bodies (or not) is so revealing about who we are, or were, or want to be.
Do or Don’t?
I’ve always loved fashion—not just the clothes themselves, but the stories they tell. Even people who say they aren’t into fashion are making a statement with what they wear. Every outfit is a reflection of beliefs, identity, or circumstance.
And those statements are often made based on the understanding that we will be judged for them. If you’re my age, you might remember Glamour magazine’s Dos and Don’ts section, where they photographed random people on the street, judged their fashion choices, and added a black rectangle over their eyes to protect the privacy of the offender if it was a don’t. Surely I would never! But honestly, sometimes you couldn’t even tell the difference between a do and a don’t. It was my favorite section.
