A Simple Writing Prompt: The Bridge
A writing exercise you can do right now + a workshop opportunity
A few years ago in my writing group, we did a writing exercise we called The Bridge. We were to write from a prompt that asked us to imagine a bridge of letters.
Now. I'll stop right here and ask you, “What do you see? What does your bridge of letters look like?” Think about it for a bit, and maybe even write down what you envision before you read on.
The Vast Variety of People’s Imaginations Is Astonishing
In our small group, interpretations of this bridge included: a large bridge structure made from tiny metal type arching over a bay; a bridge made of stepping stones inscribed with words and letters spanning a river; a bridge made of enormous monoliths—each with a letter—rising out of a large body of water; and a bridge that was a long scroll of paper with writing on it somehow magically reaching across the water flowing underneath.
I was shocked at how different the interpretations were, even knowing that this would happen. And it was fascinating to think about how our different life experiences, and who we are intrinsically, may have shaped our perceptions.
My takeaway from this is that other people can expand our vision of the world, and we can do the same for other people. Your unique viewpoint is required because no one else has it.
